The Catechism of Catholic Ethics is a comprehensive explanation of Roman Catholic teaching on the basic principles of ethics, including the eternal moral law, natural law, the three fonts of morality, the principle of double effect, the principle of cooperation with evil, the use of personal judgment and conscience, moral certitude, temptation, and differing degrees of sin and culpability. This book clarifies for the reader the distinction between positive and negative precepts, between interior and exterior acts, between doctrine and discipline, and between imperfection and sin. This work also covers magisterial teachings on specific types of acts, including lying, theft, murder, just and unjust violence, slavery, just and unjust war, abortion, contraception, in vitro fertilization, sexual sins and marital sexual ethics. The book closes with a long chapter on Catholic salvation theology, called grace and salvation.

The book is poorly written, redundant, and highly repetitive. I could not even bring myself to finish the book. Look for other books on Moral Theology because this is not the one.Product details

The Catechism of Catholic Ethics A work of Roman Catholic moral theology edition by Ronald L Conte Jr Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Very good, comprehensive & useful. Every catholic must have and read it. Regrettably it has not an imprimatur. Nevertheless I recommend this book.
Great book, has some interesting takes on topics. Mostly mainstream, but treatment of cooperation is unique.
What initially struck me about this book was its immense size. The author has clearly done an enormous amount of work in putting together this masterpiece on Catholic ethics. I highly doubt there is a more detailed volume out there that highlights each commandment and the various levels of ethical standards that we all must abide by. Unfortunately, in our society ethics tend to be very subjective. This book eliminates any doubt and sets the bar as it should be. This is clearly not a "self-help" book but rather a highly detailed examination of the three fonts of morality and how they apply to ethical behavior. As a Catholic for many years, I've often struggled with understanding the severity of sins based on the Church teachings and scripture. This book clears all that up and more! It has been said that the majority of sinners go to hell and purgatory because of sins of the flesh. This book has a very large chapter on sexual ethics which go into detail on everything from immodesty in dress to gay marriage. Additionally, the author backs up his work through various scripture and catechism references. I am a great fan of Mr. Conte's work but would feel remiss if I didn't point out what I feel is a very slight criticism in his book. I believe that there is some redundancy in what is being written and that some statements and paragraphs could be eliminated and still drive home the point. At the same time, I completely understand the importance what is being written and sometimes that just requires it be read multiple times. Overall, a great book and definitely one to grace my Catholic library for years to come! Highly recommend!!
The Catechism of Catholic Ethics is a new book that attempts to deal with the subject of ethics and moral theology in the Catholic faith. The book is quite large, at over 700 pages, and deals with a very wide range of topics such as the three fonts of morality, abortion, marital ethics and assisted reproductive technology (IVF etc.). Many of these issues and more are very controversial in society today and unfortunately are more often than not badly misunderstood and watered down. What is essential and badly needed is a proper understanding of how these issues fit into Catholic teaching, and this is exactly what this book offers to the reader.
Each chapter contains a certain topic within Catholic ethics, such as abortion, contraception, marital sexual ethics, the three fonts of morality, by which all acts are judged, and on grace and salvation. It is written in a user-friendly, everyday style that will make it accessible to virtually everybody, while at the same time retaining the necessary theological terminology to explain each concept fully. Numerous examples of real-life situations are offered alongside the explanations, which makes it easier for the reader to relate to the issue in question. The author quotes from sources such as Papal encyclicals (such as Humanae Vitae, Evangelium Vitae) and the writings of Saints and Doctors of the Church, like St. Thomas Aquinas and St. John Chrysostom, while also giving a true and faithful interpretation of each one.
Catholic Moral Theology today is in a state that leaves a lot to be desired. There are many theologians (some with all the letters of the alphabet after their names) who have been granted imprimaturs and nihil obstats who have severely watered down true and faithful Church teaching, especially on issues like contraception, pre-marital relationships and homosexuality. These persons have given society what they want to hear, and have done great spiritual damage in the process.
If you consider yourself to be a faithful Catholic who tries to live as Christ taught, then this book will be of excellent value to you. It is true that sometimes books of theology can be hit or miss as regards the soundness of their teaching, but it is clear that this book deals with the true and just teachings of the Magisterium, and of Sacred Scripture and Tradition. The book offers a clear and consistent presentation of Catholic Church teaching and for the willing faithful, it will not disappoint.
Excellent source of learning and information with sound theology faithful to Tradition, Scripture and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
If you want to grow in Catholic moral teaching and don't want to be stood still on the first communion catechism (which many have already forgotten most of its teachings, and is not fitting for an adult Catholic person because as a person grows, needs to learn more), then this book is for you. Great companion to the adult CCC.
Even if you are not Catholic, or a believer at all, if you seek moral truth, and want to become an exemplary person in good conscience, you found the book. The author uses easy to understand language, explanations and examples of many situations in life with reliable sources the teachings are taken from, it'll be of great benefit to you.
I recommend this book not to be read lightly or speedy, not trying to finish the book as fast as you can, but as you read, meditate about it.
I am familiar with the work of Ron Conte and I have been for four years. I have purchased this book and I am in the process of its study. This is a comprehensive work on Catholic moral theology and it is orthodox and consistent with sound Catholic principles. Jesus' command is to be perfect as even the Father is perfect. This is a book for those who wish to be perfect. It is not meant for everyone but for those whom God calls in a special way. I am accountable to God if I recommend writings that would lead you astray from salvation as I am equally responsible if I do not recommend a work that would benefit your salvation. As God is my witness, I heartily and with the strongest recommendation encourage this work that will benefit you eternally. Sammy Lerma III, MD.
