Welcome to the world of Amsterdam . . . coffee shops and red-light districts . . . murder and intrigue . . . a heist . . . an American who saw it for what it was . . . an opportunity.

This American, Jimmy Dempsey, long ago is accused of a murder he did not commit. A good-ole-boy from south Mississippi . . . he decides to fake his death and flee to Holland rather than face prosecution. Years later, Hunt, as he is now known by the locals, finds himself in the employ of gangsters, selling weed out of a Dutch coffee shop. When Hunt finds out that he is a free man, exonerated for the murder of his former girlfriend, he decides to return to America. Before returning home, Hunt attempts one last score, which puts him and his friends in peril. When Hunt disappears without a trace, his family is alerted, and the roller coaster ride begins.

William Dempsey, eighteen, embarks on a trip to the Netherlands in search of his long-lost brother. He finds himself in the underground world of prostitutes, mob bosses, and weed-tenders. From Amsterdam his journey takes him to South Holland, in a small city called Terneuzen. Really, it’s more like the Wild-West of Cannabis. A wholesaler’s paradise. The Sam’s Club for Amsterdam. A world that he knows nothing about . . . where hippies and junkies run rampant and gangsters patrol the town. William encounters them all. Quickly he finds himself on the trail of his elusive older brother, where a path of lies and deceit lead him along his way.

Constantijn van der Pol, the most powerful mob boss in South Holland, is also looking for the man known as Hunt. A Sicilian by blood . . . Van der Pol and his brood will stop at nothing to find the American who betrayed them all. . . .

A deep, dark novel about redemption . . . striking a chord within the soul.

Dutch Coffee Shop edition by Jay Scully Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I expected a typical mob novel - big heist/revenge crescendo and heavy firepower sequences - but instead discovered one of the most HONEST novels I have ever read, no corners cut, no holds barred. The text is DEEP: the swirls and flavors of smoke, the thump of ancient cobblestones beneath frantic tires, and a dozen skillfully managed dialogue accents. Much of the novel presents like literary fiction: there IS a sacrifice to laser character focus in exchange for depth and color. The perspective changes from Jimmy to William in the latter half of the book did uncomfortably break the pacing a bit - but I let the flavor of the novel carry me through and was satisfied when the just deserts for everyone at the table were finally served.

My 5-star rating comes with this caveat: this is NOT a book for everyone. These are "bad" people. EVERY character is drinking and/or smoking at some point in the story and cocaine is the meme used to denote the BAD BAD guys from the GOOD BAD guys. There are prostitutes at hand and sex comes into play frequently (but mercifully doesn't linger). So, if you live for running gun battles and a "worthy" hero character, this won't be your book. If you can give credit where due for stunning accuracy among evil and desperate folk, then pull up a seat, crack a Hoegaarden, and order a brownie. You're bound to enjoy and even learn a thing or two.

Dutch Coffee Shop edition by Jay Scully Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Exciting, fast paced tale that pulls you deep into another side of life that most of us don’t realize exists. Life like characters and believable dialogue tie into an intriguing plot. Great first novel!
If you are not an insomniac, you will be until you reach the end of this gripping thriller. Not only was the book a white-knuckle page turner, but I learned a lot about Holland I didn't know. Mississippi is noted for its great authors and Mr. Scully is no exception. Can't wait to read more from him.

I can't say enough about this book. I couldn't put it down. It is like you are really in the coffee shop with the characters. The dialect makes you feel like a native Zeelander. I laughed, I cried, it was wonderful. I hear they might be working on a sequel. I hope so; because, I am not going to read another book until it is out. This is the single best opening work for an author I can remember. I don't think John Grisham's first novel was this good.
In Dutch Coffee Shop, Jay Scully presents a gut-wrenching, heart-stopping tale of a man lost in a deep, dark world where peace of mind is never on offer, and death stalks its prey day and night. Scully directs a grand cast of believable characters, each drawn with clarity and brought to vibrant life by his deft hand. His creations stride with purpose across the pages, each playing an important role in the telling of this story. Some of these folks are slipping hopelessly toward death's grasp, while others just might find salvation. Jimmy Dempsey's quest for freedom from his past could gift him with something far greater--a redemption he never thought to find. Highly recommended.
The Mr. Scully did an amazing job of grabbing the reader and never letting go. Your ride is dark, nasty and brutal as you race deep into the seedy underbelly of Amsterdam's drug, sex and crime world. Give it a try!
I was drawn to the author's statement 'I simply love the written word'. Jay Scully's writing is dark and frightening as he leads us through Holland's underground drug culture in coffee shops and red light districts. An American in Amsterdam tells the story and becomes a survivor of life threatening intrigue.

THE DUTCH COFFEE SHOP is informative for those who know little about Amsterdam's underground drug scene. The story is actually more than first meets the eye. It carries a subtle message that suggests a solution for managing drug problems within our society.

The book is well edited and nicely put together.
The American Hunt ended up in Holland after having to leave the USA suddenly before the cops got him. In Holland he lived on the edge, with drugs and killings being the norm.
The author Jay Scully gives a real life look at the seedy side of life in this book, it's hard to imagine he did not go through it all himself as he reveals a side to life that is frightening. Want a different look at life in Holland this is the book to read, it takes hold of you and shakes you up.
